There's nothing worse than a monopoly, particularly when its a telco!. Telstra is the largest telco in Australia and they have just decided to increase line rental charges to net themselves an extra $200 million a year.
They've also decided to put more fees on people paying by credit card.. here's the quote of the century for a monopoly:

Well at least they didn't say they were doing it in order "to better serve their customers" --- or some such bit of self-serving hypocrasy.
By Sean Malloy on May 25, 2004, 11:04:13 pmTelstra are also the SOLE provider of the last-mile of infrastructure. That is the copper that runs from the exchange to your door. They own it, they control it. They fight like a dying dog to protect their monopoly over it.
The sooner we have cheap wireless + voice over ip, the better.
