My New Site

December 6, 2009

Granted, this blog is supposed to be mostly about Smalltalk, I figured posting a link to my new site wouldn't be terrible.

So, here we go: briannet.us is my new site. Basically, this blog is gonna be sorta a supporting page to my current site, but I will still be posting quite a bit at this blog, since it will be as originally said, my learning experiences when learning Smalltalk.

So, check on that site too, if you aren't too busy with other things. Granted, it's pretty basic, and possibly ugly right now, but it will be soon.

Seaside

She Sells SeaShells by the...SeaSide?

December 6, 2009

So, a new idea was brought up to me today over at the smalltalk IRC channel on Dalnet.

I have been working on my new site, as I mentioned yesterday, and I won't relink to again. Well, someone said that I should try doing it in Seaside, which is the webside of Smalltalk...kinda. Now, I had never taken a look at Seaside, only because it's hard to find a host that supports it since it isn't all that common of an item. The idea was then brought up that I could do it through a VPS, Virtual Private Server.

So, I started taking a look into it. It's interesting, and might be worthwhile learning along with Smalltalk. Also, it's a darn good reason to get my old computer serving up Linux, so I can play with it while I learn.

I'm gonna look into it more indepth tonight after work, and will discuss my findings here.

Still Here

December 6, 2009

Yes, I'm still alive and kicking. I haven't dropped off the face of the planet, nor was I captured, and or abducted. I've just been busy.

Between work, and sleeping, my time is so limited as of late. Guess that's what you get though for having to pay bills, you have to work, which usually sucks up your life. Plus, I been planning for my new blog, and website, which will kinda supplement this, or should I say this will supplement that? Not sure which way it will go.

Not only that, but I haven't had the time to sit down and play with Smalltalk lately. I have had a chance to fool around with RealBasic, which I never got the chance to do before, but I haven't had time to seriously sit down and continue the tutorials that are up on the Cincom site to finish learning Smalltalk.

Oh well, this week I devote to working on Smalltalk. I have some real rough ideas for stuff I would like to try and write with it, once I figure out how to write a decent database engine for it so I don't have to rely on a third-party database system, I can start implementing them.

Oh, and btw, for all the comments, thankya. I haven't had a chance to go through and respond, but I do appreciate them.

It Starts

December 6, 2009

So, this is my first post, whoopie.

I got this blog here mainly to discuss both the learning of Smalltalk, as well as the actual use of it, which from what I have seen thus far, is an area that I may just have a lot of.

I had actually never heard of Smalltalk up until a few days ago. When I was told about it, as a way to mainly learn OOP (Object Oriented Programming) concepts since it is pure OOP, I thought "Well, alright, something to play around with, learn OOP, then move onto Java". Well, after playing with it, and starting a bit of learning, I realized something: Smalltalk may just be the only language I write in for awhile. Any language that does away with the need to use bubblesorts, or any other sorting routines, I am quite happy with (C++ bubblesorts are just a blast to deal with...yea...right).

So anyway, keep reading, please? It's awfully lonely when no one reads your blog...so...keep checking back.
