VisualWorks Tutorial

Welcome to the Cincom VisualWorks Web Toolkit Tutorial
(Revision 002 : January 2004)

This tutorial is designed to help you understand how to develop a dynamic, data-driven web site using the VisualWorks Web Toolkit. It assumes you are familiar with Smalltalk but have limited experience with web programming. However, the more you know about HTML, scripting, Java Server Pages (JSP), Active Server Pages (ASP), custom tags and Java servlets, the easier it will be for you to see how those concepts are applied within the Web Toolkit (Smalltalk) environment. In other words, the VisualWorks Web Toolkit is the Smalltalk version of these development methodologies.

If you are not familiar with the terms listed above, don't worry - you've come to the right place. This tutorial will not only explain these concepts, but will do so in a logical "as they are needed" manner. Links to separate pages, called primers, will be provided so you can learn more about them and discover how they really work. When you return to the mainstream lesson, you will then see how that concept applies to the overall site design. The whole idea is to develop a dynamic (data-driven) web site by building it, step by step, from the ground up.

Because entire books have been written about HTML, Java Server Pages (JSP), Active Server Pages (ASP), custom tags and Java servlets, this tutorial will not attempt to regurgitate the same comprehensive, in-depth information on any one of these topics. This tutorial limits the amount of information on any given topic in order to keep you focused on the task at hand.

By the time you have finished this tutorial, you will have a solid knowledge of how to create, develop and distribute a fully functional web application using the VisualWorks Web Toolkit.
