This news about iTunes - movies being available there on the same day as DVD release - is huge. Combine that with "On Demand", and you can see that DVD sales are headed to the same place that CD sales went:

Hollywood Reporter says that Apple is expected to announce today an across-the-board deal to sell new release films at its iTunes Store. The deal is said to allow Apple to offer a "broad slate of top-shelf films" day-and-date with home video releases -- a long time sticking point with brick-and-mortar interests who want to keep their early-release edge on digital downloads. The deal includes Fox, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount, Universal, Sony Pictures, Lionsgate, New Line and more -- all of which are currently inked to deliver rentals through iTunes.

IMHO, Sony isn't going to enjoy the Bu-Ray win for long.

Technorati Tags:

We went to see Cloverfield this evening - it's a pretty good monster/horror flick, with the twist being the first person POV used to tell the story. My only critique? The first 20 minutes could have been done in ten minutes instead. Otherwise - relentless. It came at me the way I remember the first Terminator movie coming at me.

If they stay with the idea of showing us the post-SkyNet future, that could work. I just hope they don't get all Lucas-esque on us, and get high on their own fame and deliver the equivalent of the last three Star Wars flicks (utter dreck), or - gosh forbid - the hash that was the last Matrix movie.

Grindhouse was a box-office horror over the Easter weekend, opening in a disappointing fourth place with only $11.6 million, despite positive buzz for the faux double feature from directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, the Hollywood trade papers and wire services reported.

When you bring a movie to market that runs over 3 hours, it has to be really, really god to make big money. The production costs for this flick were reportedly low, so it might still end up on the positive side of the ledger - but how well would it have done had they dropped it down to 2 hours, or - even crazier - syndicated it out to cable TV as a 2 or three part serial?
