Using Cincom Smalltalk with SAP NetWeaver Connect

What Is SAP NetWeaver Connect?  SAP NetWeaver Connect enables SAP to use Smalltalk for explorative modeling while allowing SAP customers to profit from advantages of Smalltalk with an easy and standard way of integration into SAP projects. SAP NetWeaver Connect integrates Cincom VisualWorks with SAP solutions, opening the door to powerful back-end functionalities, which is the first step to SAP Enterprise Service Architecture. SAP NetWeaver Connect is based on SAP-endorsed integration technologies such as:
  • An industry-standard WSDL/SOAP-based approach SOAP and WSDL are typically used together and are related and complementary standards for web services. SOAP is an XML messaging protocol and also defines some basic rules about processing the messages in a SOAP envelope while WSDL is a service description language.
  • Invoke RFC (Remote Function Call)-enabled function modules RFC is a mechanism that allows business applications to communicate and exchange information with other systems and consists of two interfaces: a calling interface for ABAP (a high-level programming language created by SAP) programs and a calling interface for non-SAP.
  • Exchange Infrastructure Adaptor SAP Exchange Infrastructure (SAP XI) is SAP‘s enterprise application integration software, which is a component of the NetWeaver product group used to facilitate the exchange of information among a company’s internal software and systems and those of external parties.
NetWeaver Connect enables:
  • SAP customers to use Smalltalk next to ABAP and Java
  • Tight process integration of Smalltalk into SAP NetWeaver applications
The general architecture of SAP NetWeaver Connect:
  • Enhances Cincom VisualWorks Web Services
  • Is a service-oriented application model
  • Provides separation of application and services
  • Is a session-based service execution
Smalltalk’s strengths, such as modeling and rapid prototyping, are easily accessible at SAP. The large SAP customer base can choose to do their functional enhancements with Cincom VisualWorks, while SAP partners can close white spaces in SAP’s Business Application Map with certifiable applications created with VisualWorks. In this sense, SAP NetWeaver Connect makes Cincom VisualWorks a “first-class citizen” in the SAP NetWeaver world.
