Scoble on the iPod video

Scoble on the iPod video:

One thing, though. Steve Jobs better never tell me we're copying him next time I meet him in the street. Why? Cause he brought out a video-playing computer (we call those Media Centers) and a portable video-playing device.

I'll bet that there will be one crucial difference - the Apple version probably won't drop audio for no apparent reason, like my Media Center PC does.

And the remote only has 6 button, or so, versus 45 or more for the microsoft solution

Both Apple and Microsoft are just copying the work of others

Webpads, videophones, digital home networking (wireless and wired,) audio-video-computer convergence, handheld digital music music players, smart appliances (from refrigerators to lighting systems,) DVRs, media servers, computers embedded in clothing, and much, much more were all brainstormed, researched, analyzed and prototyped by Interval Research in the 1990s. Microsoft and Apple, as well as many other large, well-known companies (usually Japanese,) were given access to the research under NDA agreements. I know, because I was there.

There's not much that has come out so far this decade as product in the consumer digital device domain that wasn't thought up and prototyped at Interval 5 to 10 years ago.

Interesting definition of copying

A video-playing computer is a copy of media center? Uh, my mac was playing video, albeit postage stamp size), back in 1991-92ish. And calling the iPod a video-playing device is like calling it a photo album. Sure you can view pictures or movies on it, but to say the primary motivation of the device is to play videos is crazy. It's the same price as the old iPod. It's a new feature to an old product.

And then there's Mac TV!

Sure, it sucked, but at least they tried (before Microsoft had gotten all the kinks out of Windows 3.1)
