Not what I thought I had
Well, the new HD isn't quite what I thought it was. It's not a replacement HD - it's a small external (USB) HD. That's ok - I can always use more space. The trouble started when I hooked it up to Windows. It was recognized, but it wouldn't mount. That was a bit confusing. I slapped it across the room to the Mac, and discovered why - it had no file system on it. The Mac was able to format it as a Windows drive though, so I can now use it for either system. It's small enough to pack in my bag, so I could presumably install Linux on it, set my notebook to be bootable from USB, and have a Linux system at Smalltalk Solutions in April. I'll have to see about doing that - for today, I've had enough system maintenance :)

That's a good plan. I kind of suspect that showing up at Linux World and showing off your Windows laptop might make more than a few of the attendees tune out.

USB drives are OK for certain types of access, but they don't work well for time sensitive applications.

That small external USD drive is just a regular 60GB IDE drive in an enclosure. Just open the case and use the hard drive as you originally wanted to.
As a bonus, put the old drive in the enclosure to hold backups.
Well...

I know about the enclosure - I put it there. The problem is, it's a 5400 rpm drive, and the old one is a 7200 rpm. I don't need to have a slower machine :)
Slower?

Shouldn't be noticeably slower. Once you load your image and your parcels, your disk access should be minimal.

that's quite a statement...requiring a macintosh to set up your hard drive for the windows machine....look how you just went and did that..."i'll use the mac...it's easy"
begs the question as to why anyone settles for windows.
