It's not that simple
James Governor wants some interop between competing IDE's (by which he means NetBeans and Eclipse) - at least at the plugin level. He asks:
But couldn't we learn from the wireless providers and at least have a roaming agreement?
Well, that assumes that the infrastructure underpinning the two are similar enough to allow for plugins that work in both. I seriously doubt that's the case, nor will it be anytime soon.

The plug-in architecture has to be more "loosely coupled" than is typically implemented in MSFT VS or Eclipse. Or other IDEs.
An appropriate architecture was actually demonstrated 15 years ago but is now all but lost in spite of the new SOA rave.

if Sun can do deals with Microsoft and IBM, then why on earth can't the netBeans people at least have a conversation with Eclipse? Like i say, its not about the technology. a roaming agreement begins with a conversation between organizations, not a technology.
It's still not that simple

Even if IBM and Sun got all chummy, there's still a basic technology problem to solve.
