In case I'd forgotten

March 28, 2005 14:35:05.293

Well, just in case I'd forgotten how bad dialup was, I'm staying at a Best Western on Sepulveda that has no broadband - and no Wifi (open or otherwise) within range either. I seem to have left the phone cable in one of my other pc bags, so I had to go beg one from the front office. Fortunately, they had one. Then, I had to call back and get my phone enabled for long distance calls. After all that, a blazing 24 kbps connection.

Which makes me wonder - there are still people using dialup instead of broadband. Why?

They are cheap? They haven't done broadband and don't know what they are missing? Or, the ever popular "it isn't an option." I have a friend who just recently got broadband available in his area.

Out in the country!

Those of use that live in rural areas don't have any option other than expensive - for the speed DirecWay satellite. I'll buy it if offered. I finally broke down and got DirecWay when the equipment finally dropped below $500 installed. And even that is strech to be called broadband 400k download 50k upload! and is more expensive than cable modem or DSL in our area.

Easter evening, I set up my father-in-law with an AOL account. I showed him how it works, so he was able to log on and look up some news and sports sites.

So he calls my wife this morning and says, "I'm trying to get into AOL and when I type my password, all I see are stars on the screen."

It's going to be a long process. (sigh)

a) They can't get it. Here in Australia there are staged rollouts. Coverage is pretty good now, a few years ago it was hit or miss whether you could get adsl, and cable was limited to Melbourne and Sydney only (And limited there anyway). I don't personally know of anyone on dialup by choice. I know what you mean, when we moved to Tassie, all I had access to was dialup, and it was a pain. I re-entered the world of modem initialisation strings again. Man that was a joke, I'm surprised the internet ever took off, what with all the technical barriers and all. They'll take my adsl connection from me when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. Here's hoping my exchange gets upgraded to ADSL2 in the next year, and get a 12mb/1mb connection.
