Disk Space Galore
1 Terabyte drives are popping up all over - here's Seagate's announcement:
The drives come with either SATA (for consumers and enterprises) or SAS (for enterprises) interfaces and have an MFRP of US$399, which is the same as competitor Hitachi GST's 1TB drive.
Ponder that for a moment. I clearly recall buying a second 40MB drive back in the late 80's, when my first 40 MB drive was filling up. I also clearly recall thiking "I'll never need more disk". I'd say that again, but I know better. I'm editing audio these days, which chews disk. My daughter edits video, which chews mountains of disk. I can only imagine how much disk space we'll be chewing 3 years from now - but it'll be a lot.

I recall the pricing for a pair of 90K drives and an expansion interface for my old TRS-80 Model I. An extra 16K and 2 5 1/4 inch drives for $1800.

At the same time, Seagate is pushing the 2.5" HDDs on the grounds that you can put 3 such HDDs in the space of 1 3.5" disk, with about the same resulting capacity. Then their argument is you should choose the 2.5" ones because they provide 3x disk heads to access the same information, and thus the array is faster.
So... for less than $400 including shipping, you can get 2 enterprise class 500gb drives, which as soon as you put them in an array will outperform the 1TB drive. Bigger is not always better.
And if you want to know where all the disk space is gone

you may use the tiny Dirlot utility (http://soft.km.ua/soft/dirlot/index.en.html). It shows colorful report allowing you to quickly determine whо chews the most.
