Last year my daughter (the little devil) convinced me that there was a shorcut in the pool on the cruise ship course. Sploosh! There isn't. ;D

Wait until you unlock the Rainbow Road course. Just staying on the dang course is the most difficult part of the whole race. I comes down to "Whoever falls off least" wins.
Mario Kart Double Dash

The Mario Kart games are about the only games in recent years I can play. Halo 2? No way. I can't even point the thing straight.
Even so my kids are so much better than me. I could stay on the original Rainbow Road on the N64 game. I cannot for the life of me stay on that Double Dash road. My 12 yo stays on just fine and never lets me forget it.
Cruise ship? The shortcut I'm aware of is dropping down the stairwell IIRC. I never found it to be much more of a shortcut though.
My favorite track is new with this version of the game... Baby Park. The one race where I can beat my kids almost every time *if* I get Peach and her friend as the drivers... their "heart" special power for absorbing most of the items is very useful on that 7 lap oval.
