Industry Misinterpretations 105: Who was that masked listener?

September 28, 2008 9:57:31.587

This week Michael and I discussed our recent presentations (of Seaside and Web Velocity) to Smalltalk and Ruby user groups. We then moved into responding to some listener feedback that had piled up unanswered over the last few weeks. You can grab the mp3 here.

As per the discussion, if you are interested in the Web Velocity beta, please send me an email.

If you have feedback, send it to smalltalkpodcasts@cincom.com - or visit us on Facebook or Ning - you can vote for the Podcast Alley, and subscribe on iTunes. If you enjoy the podcast, pass the word - we would love to have more people hear about Smalltalk!

Seaside portability

[] September 28, 2008 14:24:45.976

Using Seaside as a web framework doesn't magically make your Smalltalk code any more portable to an other Smalltalk dialect. Iff you follow the Seaside portability guidelines, and there is no away of being sure due to Smalltalks lack of static typing, that only makes it likely that your web ui code is portable. All your IO, database, XML, webservices, logging, desktop UI, ... code is still unportable and has to be rewritten.

Exactly

The previous commenter had it exactly right: you really need to add static typing to Smalltalk.  That would fix everything.

On another note, you know what bugs me about chocolate bars?  They taste so damn chocolatey.  I wish someone would make one with no chocolate.  That would fix everything.
