Another Phone Contender

January 9, 2009 6:48:11.004

It looks like I have to consider another phone come February: the Palm Pre (which will be on the Sprint network). Engadget seems to like it:

The UI is incredibly well thought out and smooth. Animations going in and out of apps, and all of the menus and switching are done with a grace and simplicity that we rarely see on any device. The UI outclasses most of its competition on a number of levels, and actually may be quite a bit more revolutionary than the iPhone. Multitasking works like a charm, and reps say you can push it quite hard before you'll need to close applications. One of the most fascinating components of the UI is that when you're zoomed out to cards, the data is still active in the previews.

They only got to see near final prototypes at CES though, so there's no word yet on what battery life will be like. Being able to change batteries isn't nearly as good as decent life, so I'll have to wait and see on that. Also, it's not a world phone (which is a downside for me). Still - looks interesting.

I been on the Sprint network before and had terrible reception.  I do like the all inclusive plan they have but if you have bad coverage the all the inclusive plan does little good.

Something I just learned about the iPhone that you might want to keep in back of your mind.  A coworker lost his iPhone other day and he of course used it for his work email.  He called apple and asked if they could remotely kill it like blackberry and was told they could not.  Best he could do was change all his passwords.

Network Not An Issue

I've been in the following areas since I started using Sprint's network:

  • Southern California (from San Diego to Los Angeles to Santa Barbara to Barstow to Desert Hot Springs)
  • Ohio (from Columbus to Dayton to Cincinnati)
  • Nebraska (from Lincoln to Kearney to Schuyler)
  • various airports as I have gone to and from those areas

I have not had any issues with Sprint's network. On the other hand, prior to switching, I was with AT&T for a few years. I had unusable service in these areas:

  • Southern California
  • Nevada (Reno, Carson City, Las Vegas)
  • New York (Albany, Binghamton)

In each of these areas (both lists), I also used the work phones (Verizon). Other than your occasional dead spot, Verizon always worked. Everywhere. Likewise, I have yet to find an area where Sprint does not have usable service, and that includes 3G Internet.

There was *one* place where AT&T had good service: New Jersey. If you're going to stay in New Jersey, AT&T is the way to go. If you're going to travel, switch to Verizon or Sprint.

About the Pre. I'm looking at it also. It looks good, so far. When I got my Instinct, they handed me a phone and said to call someone and visit a few websites before I made my decision. Sold me right on the spot. I'm hoping they do the same with the Pre.
