I like Google Calendar

August 18, 2006 10:46:08.769

Scoble prefers Outlook:

Heck, I’m nearly being forced to use Google Calendar and I really really really hate it (sorry, I’m an Outlook addict). If Google can’t get me excited about its calendar there’s no way that I’ll use a calendar from a company I’ve never heard of, don’t trust. Sorry. That’s the entrepreneur’s challenge. Google can win me over just by sheer momentum. Translation: my boss will say “you vil use Google and you vil like it.”

My dislike of Outlook's calendar function doesn't have much to do with my general dislike of Outlook. I have tried multiple desktop calendar apps, and I've never warmed to them. I like Google's, because it's simple and it stays out of my way. Admittedly, I'm not in a corporate office, so my needs are somewhat different here.

SummerTalk iCalendar

I see two downsides to Google Calendar: 1. You need to be online 2. You need to trust google with all your data.

When the latter can be understandable and acceptable, the former is really annoying. I use Apple's iCal and it works very well. I am also working on a Smalltalk implementation of an iCalendar as part of the ESUG SummerTalk. I will post over the week end on the advancement of the project and on the directions I'll take from there.

Like Yann, I like iCal. Also like Yann, I have a distrust of keeping my data at Google (or Yahoo! or anywhere else that I don't control). I'm not sure if there's a generally acceptable way around the "let the vendor see your data" problem, but I'd be interested if there was one.

I get an email with my agenda on it from Google every day at 5 AM. Also, for the group features of Outlook (which I expect are the ones people in an office setting like/need), you need to be online as well.
