Looks like BellSouth is about to be grabbed by AT&T - which will leave us with two big telcos - Verizon and AT&T. Kind of like the way Standard Oil was mostly rebuilt when Exxon bought Mobil a couple of years ago. Over the long haul, it looks a lot like the lawyers are the only ones who win from anti-trust suits.

There will be three big telcos.  You forgot about Quest, which covers the north- and mid-west.  Granted, Quest isn't as big as Verizon and merged BellSouth/AT&T, but it is still pretty big.  One other interesting thing to note is that the combined BellSouth/AT&T would be come the leading broadband provider with 10 million DSL lines verses Comcast's 7.5 million.
