Has Microsoft learned nothing?
The theory seems to be "the more the merrier" - there are going to be six versions of Windows 7 available. When you get OS X, there's one version. When you download the typical Linux distro there are two: Server and client. Why on earth would you want six? And who would want "Starter:, limited to:
- No Aero Tweaks
- No more than 3 simultaneous applications
The team that came up with that idea should be part of that 5000 that are getting laid off. From all the reports I've seen and read, Windows 7 looks like it's got the technical goods down. It would be a real shame if the marketing people killed it. I can already see the "switch" ad campaign Apple will brew up in response to this....

Not all 7 available

While it is confusing that there are 7, realistically - only 3 are available via retail (Amazon.com, shelves, etc.): Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows Ultimate. This isn't that different from XP - Home and Professional.
The Starter version is probably for OLPC or Netbooks. not something you'd buy off the shelf. Home Basic - emerging markets. And enterprise is only available for via bulk licensing so businesses.
Yes it would be nice if there was one, but they do target different audiences.
Still two too many

Justin: That is still two too many at the retail level. There should be two versions: non-enterprise and enterprise.
seems stupid to me

This still seems like marketing driven silliness. Adding that extra complexity to the code base to put in throttles and either disable features, or doing special builds that don't have the features included, is just an invitation for bugs and confusion.

They should have enterprise/non enterprise, or call it client and server. But that's all they need, IMHO. 6 just puts up a huge sign for Apple to throw darts at.
borg designations?

Maybe this is all a borg naming scheme. One of Seven, Two of Seven, etc...

So because they wanted a Borg naming scheme they decided on seven versions? Or perhaps there is some sort of occult numerology going on here. Windows 7. Seven versions. Any more sevens?
