I'll wait for an Air

March 12, 2008 13:35:08.679

Based on this story from ComputerWorld, I think the smart move is to pass on the MacBook Air, and wait for the second and third generation devices. The current Air has a 64 GB flash drive; here's what's coming:

Intel Corp. today confirmed that it is close to unveiling a new line of solid-state drives for laptop and notebook PCs that will feature a storage capacity up to 160GB.

That's still less storage than I'd like (my MacBook Pro sports a 250 gb drive) - but it's pretty big. And consider the battery life: a lot of the energy goes to spin those platters. No platters should mean a lot more uptime between charges...

Flash drive reuse??

[Greg Kujawa] March 12, 2008 14:12:14.466

What I always wonder about is the amount of times an internal flash drive can be written to. I know that they supposedly have practically umlimited reads, but I've read that writes can be perhaps 100K or so. With swap files, OS file access, etc. the internal flash drive might take a dive in a year or so of consistent usage. About my only concern though....
