Tempting me

July 5, 2006 11:13:01.211

Apple is tempting me again:

Apple® today introduced a new $899 configuration of the 17-inch iMac® designed specifically for education customers featuring a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, a built-in iSight(TM) video camera and iLife® '06, the next generation of Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications. The 17-inch iMac for education is available immediately and will replace the eMac®, Apple's last CRT based computer, providing students and teachers everything they need to learn and create in today's digital classroom, all in the ultra-efficient iMac design.

Still too expensive

I do not see this being a good deal.

You can get similiar spec PC from Dell or many other PC maker for much cheaper still.

While apple is trendy and puts together a good machine I still find them over priced in a power per dollar compared to a PC.

Dell

I've got two dells; one is 8 years old, the other is a 3-year-old laptop. I bought the dell laptop because of the display (which is still fantastic), but its power management sucks and my biggest complaint is it always runs hot.

The fact that the CPU is pegged at 80% most of the time doing virus scans might have something to do with it, and you might want to take your perceived price/performance calculations with a grain of salt.

I've been tempted to buy a Mac for years, but always chicken out. Interestingly, BF's argument sounds a lot like jarober's before he became a mac zealot :)

If it wins me any points, I learned to program on a Mac and it was my platform of choice for Smalltalk and network programming for 5 years before Windows NT 4.0 came along in 1996 and suddenly a Wintel box passed the Mac on stability. My wife wants a Mac however. So it's only a matter of time...

Well if your wife wants a Mac......

One can not argue against the wife point.  :)

Also to be totaly honest if I was just going to buy a PC to do photo album work, internet surfing, word processing, and other mundane household tasks Mac would be a fine buy for its simplicty and also huge points in style but once you get past that I find it lacking.

I tossed Dell out there as an example just because it is well known and I agree buying the $500 dell may not be always the best choice but I find I get more juice from a PC for the same price then a Mac.

I have always thought that if Apple ever did what IBM did and let others build and sell Macs the world would be a different place.
