Since they are rumored to be using Smalltalk on the server side, does anyone know what flavor they are using (Visualworks, Gemstone,...)? Any architecture details?

Judging from the squeak mailing list, I'd say its Seaside on Squeak :)
Andrew had mentioned they don't have a real backend and keep all data in-memory. I imagine they snapshot it to some arbitrary format occasionally though. Give Avi or Andrew a shout at Squeak Mailing List.
