Scott McNealy, Prognosticator

January 12, 2006 19:30:26.536

I see that Scott McNealy is predicting the demise of the iPod:

Sun Microsystems Chief Executive Scott McNealy consistently credits Apple Computer for good marketing--to the point where he listed what he believes will be his own company's glorious iPod moments. But McNealy said Wednesday believes the iPod itself will be replaced in coming years by music stored in the network.

Yeah, I'm sure that Apple will go into hibernation and pay no attention to ongoing trends. Meanwhile, how's that "everything is free" working out for the profit margins?

What does this man smoke? The iPod is actually a way to get and keep music off the network until such time as .Mac is big enough to store it. And, how am I going to listen to "music on the net" when I'm out walking my dog, exercising in a gym, in a wireless-free-zone, or on an airplane?

This whole "The network is the computer" idea would hold more water if you couldn't fit a powerful computer (like an iPod) in your pocket. Corporations will not be able to control the network (or networks; many, many little ones?) anyway, and they won't be able to control what people are going to do with all the little computers they use every day.
