The Irony of DRM

January 2, 2006 11:23:26.134

In the comments to my last post on this topic, I followed a link to this site, which explains how to defeat the stupid "protection" on EMI CD's. The irony? From the site:

Because I don't usually copy CDs, I found it a little ironic that the ‘copy control technology’ required me to make a copy of the album in order to use it. Since my experience with the 80s Alternative album, I have bought many other CDs, and the ones with copy control technology are the only ones I have copied.

The labels are just dumber than rocks.

Me Too

Add me to the list of users that end up copying copy-protected CDs. Some time ago, I purchased the latest Foo Fighters CD, In Your Honor. Unfortunately, it was copy-protected, meaning that I could not play it on my computer unless I installed some driver-level software. I don't think so. A search on Google led me to a forum on the Foo Fighters' website. A post pointed to another website. Ten mintues later I had ripped the original CD and copied the songs to a blank CD to play in my vehicles.

The original CD is somewhere in my house. It was one of three CDs I purchased in 2005. Back in my university days (late 80s), I used to buy at least one CD a week. But, I don't like being treated like a criminal (plus I have other priorties like kids, mortgage and car payments), so I buy very few CDs. Screw the RIAA.
