Here's a Tablet PC question

June 6, 2004 11:01:13.870

I've noticed that the Tablet PC is getting a lot of hype in some parts of the blogosphere. I was talking about this with a friend the other day, and he brought up something that I hadn't thought of - damage to the screen. What do I mean by that? Well, next time you are at Target (or any of the stores that have electronic credit card signing now), have a look at the screen you sign on. Notice how scratched up it is? Of course, no one is really caring for those screens, or trying to prevent scratching. Still - under constant stylus use, they take a lot of damage. Makes me wonder just what a Tablet PC screen looks like after a few months of active use. Anyone have any real experience with this? Admittedly, my thoughts here are only an educated guess based on similar technology in use....

Mine looks pretty scratchless

I just opened up my tablet to look for scratches on the screen. With the screen off, and wiggling it around so that the light will really expose anything on the screen, I see no scratches. Granted, this is not my daily driver. But honestly, the screen looks pretty dang good. There are ruggedized Tablets on the market. check back wtih me after some of these little acers (non-ruggedized) have been in the hands of field technicians on construction sites and I'll let you know what they look like.

Try one out

Wacom make most of the digitizers used in Tablet PCs, and they've had a lot of field experience. They give the pen a plastic tip that's softer than the surface of the screen, so it's the tip that wears out, not the screen. And they bundle replacement tips with every pen.

I've been using a Toshiba tablet PC for over a year, no screen damage at all.

scratches

The point of purchase machines at Target, etc., get scratched up because people try to use ball-point pens on them, instead of the correct stylus

My newton and palm didn't get scratched up, but I'm not using either of them these days. My iPod has my address book on it, which is the only functionality I actually used in the Palm and Newton.
